Harvey Daniels: Ten Years was the first show to be selected and put on tour by the University
of Brighton following important extensions to the University's
gallery space in the summer of 1997.
Here is a foreword by
Professor Bruce Brown Dean of the Faculty of Art, Design and Humanities at
the University of Brighton, and an essay by
Professor Mike Tucker.
"The
isms by which we know and discuss modern art don't ever help much,
least of all in this instance. Harvey Daniels opted long ago
for an artistic mode unlabelled because we never speak of it:
like Matisse and Brancusi
, and like Stuart Davis (whom he greatly admires),
he uses art to communicate joy and energy. His images speak of
humanity's positive potential, the forces that enable us to be
generous, cheerful and optimistic inspite
of the fears and disappointments that haunt us."
Norbert Lynton, April 1991.
